I let my 11-year-old son walk home from school alone for the first time. Twenty minutes later, my neighbor called me crying.

“Come outside. You need to see what your son did.”

Joel had been asking me for weeks.

“Mom, it’s ten minutes. I’m eleven. I can walk home by myself.”

Normally, I picked him up every afternoon, but he wasn’t wrong. His school was close, the route was familiar, and we’d walked it together dozens of times.

So that Friday, I finally agreed.

Before he left that morning, I made him repeat the rules.

“Straight home. No shortcuts. No stopping anywhere.”

Joel sighed. “I know.”

“And text me when you leave school.”

“Yes, Mom.”

At 3:11, my phone buzzed.

“On my way.”

I smiled. He’d been so excited about doing something on his own that I decided not to hover.

Ten minutes passed.

Then fifteen.

At twenty, I checked the window.

No Joel.

I picked up my phone to text him. Before I could, it rang.

Ivy.

She lived three houses down and had known Joel since he was little.

“Hey, Ivy.”

For a second, all I could hear was her breathing. Then I realized she was crying.

“Are you home?”

My stomach tightened. “Yeah. What happened?”

“Come outside. It’s about Joel.”

“Ivy, what happened?”

“He’s here. He’s okay.”

“Then why are you crying?”

She took a shaky breath.

“You need to see what your son did.”

I was already moving toward the door.

When I stepped outside, Ivy was standing near the curb, wiping tears from her face. Joel was farther down the sidewalk, his backpack still on.

I walked closer.

And stopped.

“Joel… what have you done?”
